The joy of giving

A little girl clutched her pocket money,
The lot that she had been stacking up-
Since her birthday mid-year,
For a special Christmas gift that she had set her mind on.

She had heard her papa say one day,
When walking past the side store,
That the brown wallet was just the thing he wanted,
But he would buy it the coming year.

The little girl smiled thinking how,
Her papa’s face would light up,
Upon receiving the very thing,
That he had set his heart on.

But when she was just a door away,
She saw a mother asking her child to choose a smaller toy.
It was clear that the mother did not have enough,
For the train being eyed by her boy.

The little girl couldn’t move,
As she saw the boy’s longing eyes.
She hastened to gift the train to the lad,
But did not wait to see that she had made two people glad.

She was almost in tears when she reached her home,
She ran to her mamma and told her how the precious money was parted.
Her mother smiled at her little girl,
Proud that she had grown to be kind hearted.

The little girl finally went happily to sleep,
When she heard that saint Nicholas would certainly make a note,
Of how she had helped him with one boy’s toy,
And how the boy’s mother had shared in that joy.

That night both mother and daughter dreamt of how ‘papa’ would smile,
The mother- thinking of when she tells him of their girl’s kindness,
And that Santa’s gift be the amount that was given away; while-
The faith of the little girl showed her gift in her papa’s hands.
